Limewash finishes have become extremely popular with house owners wishing to renovate period property with authenticity and sensitivity to the original materials used. Limewashing allows the building to breathe internally and externally. The vibrant white colour can be used as a base for water-based pigments - resulting in a full range and depth of earth colours and natural hues.
Casein Distemper is a paint base originally derived from milk and its use dates back to the ancient Egyptian Era. A form of tempera paint - its even consistency and matte finish make it an ideal paint for decorative surfaces such as ceilings and mouldings.
Venetian Plaster is a natural lime-based plaster which contains no synthetics. This is an historical technique of mixing lime and marble creating a variety of finishes including high polish or matte effect, either smooth or granular to the touch.

Finishes
It is essential that the finishes to the interior walls allow the release of moisture. Traditional lime washes, natural paints, casein distempers and Venetian plaster ensure natural breath ability.
Limewash
Lime wash is created by diluting aged, high quality lime putty with water. The resulting milky wash is applied as a number of coats to finished lime plaster or untreated brick or stone to give an incredibly smooth, matt finish. The wash can be coloured using water-based pigments resulting in vibrant colours or earth based tones. The clear white, smooth matt finish of lime wash is particular to the quality of lime itself. It is impossible to achieve the same finish using modern paints.
Casein Distemper
As an alternative to lime washes, and in order to maintain the correct traditional interior surface quality of a period home, we can use casein distemper paints on walls and smooth distemper on moldings and ceilings. Distempers give a wonderfully silky finish. When a more durable finish is required, we can use natural emulsions.
Venetian Plaster
Excellent as an alternative to tiles, Venetian plaster gives a traditional, splash proof finish to general areas in kitchens and bathrooms. Venetian plaster is a combination of quality lime putty and marble dust. Several washes of Venetian plaster are applied; the final layer being polished or burnished and finished with an application of natural wax. When Venetian plaster is used in showers and wet areas in bathrooms, natural oil can be applied to create a durable, weather proof surface.
Venetian plaster perfectly complements the soft interior feel of a traditional house, giving an incredibly smooth, hard wearing finish that delightfully enhances the play of natural light.
