One of London’s Best Known Vegetarian Restaurants
We’ve heard rave reviews of The Gate’s original home in Hammersmith and were looking forward to trying out the sibling branch – The Gate Restaurant in Islington.
We went for the pre-theatre dinner and the restaurant was buzzing – it was good to see it so full. The food is fusion style, elegantly presented with deliciously light and delicate flavours.
Starting with their showcase starter the Courgette flower
Pan fried, filled with a sweet potato stuffing flavoured with Thai basil, ginger, garlic and chilli served Morning Glory and a sesame and lime dressing
Looked beautiful on the plate and very complex flavours although the batter could have been crisper, the stuffing and dressing were delicious.
Starter – Smoked tofu and spring mint vegetable roll
Served with a sweet and sour dipping sauce and pickled pink ginger
Delicate flavours with a very subtle smokiness to the tofu…
Our main courses looked beautiful – great care in the presentation matched by balanced and unusual flavours, both looked and tasted divine.
Wild Mushroom Rotolo
Wild mushroom duxcelle wrapped in thyme infused potato topped with goats cheese, served on French beans, creamy cep reduction sauce and finished with deep fried leeks
This dish looked absolutely beautiful on the plate and the flavours did not disappoint
Char grilled aubergine layered with coriander pesto, roasted red peppers, shitake mushrooms and fresh horseradish, coated with crispy breadcrumbs and served on stir fried noodles with a pickled ginger and mango salad
Explosive flavours that made this dish sublime
We were only able to manage one pudding (!)
So it had to be the Lemon Posset
A rich lemon flavoured set cream served with thin lemon biscuits
So creamy and lemony and the little biscuits were so delicious…
We loved the food – the service was OK, we did feel that ‘extras’ were pushed a little and the moment we took the last mouthful of the main course, we were asked if we’d like to see the dessert menu. However, once we asked for time to relax we were given all the time we needed – there was no sense of a rush to move us on.
In all, very enjoyable for both vegetarians and meat eaters and so good to find really imaginative vegetarian food taking centre stage.
Cost £80 for two including wine.
