Innovative Mattress Maker Naturalmat, quietly hailed as small business champion, is proud to set an excellent example for British manufacturing. At Naturalmat, each mattress is made by hand at their eco-friendly, custom built factory in Devon, using locally sourced materials where-ever possible. From its base in the UK, Natural Mat successfully services a global client base and believes the success of its business model is due in no small part to skilled craftsmanship, sustainability and environmental awareness.
Naturalmat believes that people will always make superior products which can never be matched by a machine produced equivalent. With the courage of their convictions, Naturalmat opted from the outset not to invest in heavy machinery but instead invested in a team of craftsmen, dedicated to making the world’s best mattresses by hand. Every stitch is painstakingly created and checked. Using this model, Naturalmat knows that their mattresses are produced competitively as well as to a high standard that will provide years of long lasting comfort.
Naturalmat uses locally sourced organic lambs wool from certified Soil Association farms for their mattresses. The wool is processed in Dartmoor using water from the River Dart, which is then recycled and fed back into the river. Naturalmat uses an extract of essential oils (lavender, lemon and eucalyptus) to make their mattresses naturally dust mite resistant. Wool is the most efficient natural insulator, constantly helping to regulate temperature as well as being inherently fire retardant. As a result, all Naturalmat tuftings are chemical free.
By being environmentally conscious, Naturalmat has also made savings in overheads. Through initiatives such as the installation of solar PV panels at the factory, Naturalmat has kept costs low enough to maintain a national and global competitive advantage. Last year Naturalmat successfully won the contract to supply all 670 mattresses for Yotel New York City, testament to their global appeal and a feather in the cap for British manufacturing.
